Our 5 tips for choosing your shampoo

Not always easy to choose your shampoo among the thousands of choices available to you? Today in our blog, we give you our 5 tips to avoid making mistakes and make the most suitable choice!

1. Choose a shampoo that is adapted to your hair type and scalp: especially if you have a sensitive scalp. But this has its limits: a shampoo is first and foremost a cleansing product, and sometimes only slightly moisturizing. Any gentle formula will therefore suit all hair types. The rest is all about marketing… Be careful with anti-dandruff shampoos: some of their active ingredients are beginning to be incriminated for their possible toxicity: like zinc pyrithione (used by Schwarzkopf for example).

2.Avoid overly aggressive cleansing agents: these will attack and dry out the scalp and hair. To be avoided especially for sensitive scalps, suffering from itching, dandruff, etc. Examples of aggressive ingredients: sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. Mild cleansing agents often lather less than more aggressive ones. It is therefore necessary to get used to a lower foaming power; but it is just a good habit to get used to, because the cleaning power is not at all related to the foaming power. A mild, low-foaming shampoo can also be a good cleanser.

3.Avoid silicones: very bad for the environment. Moreover, they do not bring anything to the hair: they are concealers that will make the hair look beautiful, soft and shiny. But in reality, they are not, and will in fact remain brittle and dry. This will be even more noticeable when you stop using the product that contains them. Silicones are easy to recognize because they all end with the following endings: -icone, -iconol, -siloxane. It is recommended to choose a product whose components will nourish and strengthen the hair fiber: jojoba oil, coconut oil, honey, etc. It takes a little time for the effects to become visible after stopping using a product with silicone, but they will be real and will last and strengthen over time.

4.As with all skincare products, avoid anything that is harmful to health and/or the environment: synthetic perfumes (allergenic, endocrine disruptors), petrochemical derivatives, preservatives that are harmful to health and/or the environment (parabens, EDTA, phenoxyethanol, methylisothiazolinone), etc. The impact of shampoos on the environment is important because they are found in the rinsing water.

5.Baby shampoos: give absolute preference to natural (at least 95% natural origin) and gentle shampoos. They must have a neutral pH (= 7) to respect the pH of the skin of the little ones, and have been tested for their ocular tolerance.
